Senaryosunu da, Carlo Collodi'nin "The Adventures of Pinocchio" (1883) isimli romanının Gris Grimly'nin görsel hale getirdiği kitabından (2002) uyarlayarak Patrick McHale ile birlikte yazan usta sinemacı Guillermo del Toro'nun ilk uzun metrajlı (debut) sinema filmini çeken Mark Gustafson ile beraber yönetmen koltuğunda oturmakta olduğu “Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio”; müzikleriyle de kulakların pasını silen, fantastik bir animasyon olarak geliyor karşımıza...

Gelin isterseniz, 35 milyon dolarlık bir bütçeyle çekilen ve "En İyi Animasyon Film" kategorisindeki 2023 yılının Academy Ödülünün, en iddialı adaylarından birisi olabileceğini şimdiden kolaylıkla tahmin edebildiğimiz; 1930'lu yılların Faşist Mussolini İtalya'sının atmosferinin, arka plan olarak kullanıldığı bu Netflix filmine biraz daha yakından bakalım...

Film, bir anlamda filmin anlatıcısı da (narrator) olan Sebastian J. Cricket'ın (seslendiren Ewan McGregor), ana karakterlere ilişkin aşağıdaki tanıtımıyla başlar:


"Geppetto Usta (seslendiren David Bradley), Pinokyo'yu (seslendiren Gregory Mann) yaptığında bir oğlunu çoktan kaybetmişti bile... Bu olduğunda, ben henüz ortalarda yoktum... Ama hikayesini öğrendim ve benim hikayem haline geldi...

Geppetto, Carlo'yu (seslendiren Gregory Mann) büyük savaşta (16 Ekim 1916) kaybetmişti... Birlikte sadece 10 yıl geçirmişlerdi... Fakat Carlo giderken, sanki ihtiyarın yaşama sevincini de yanında götürmüştü...

Mutlu ve mesut bir hayat sürdüren bu baba ile oğulun, hiçbir eksikleri yokmuş... Birbirlerine yetip de artıyorlarmış...

Rivayete göre, aslında Geppetto'nun kasabası savaşta hedef bile değilmiş ve uçaklar üslerine dönerlerken; ağırlık atmak için bombalarını aşağıya bırakmışlar...

Onlardan bir tanesi de, Geppetto'nun yeni bir haç yapmakta olduğu kiliseye isabet etmesi suretiyle; baba ile oğulun, sonsuza kadar birbirlerinden ayrılmalarına yol açmıştır...

Zira her zamanki gibi Carlo, kilisede de babasına çıraklık yapmaktaymış ve ne yazık ki; babası dışarıda kalmışken Carlo, içeride unuttuğu çam kozalağını almak üzere gerisin geriye kilisenin içine doğru yönelmiştir...

Bu elim olayın sonrasında...

Carlo'nun yetiştirmek istediğini söyleyerek babasına da gösterdiği pırıl pırıl çam kozalağını, yeşermesi için oğlunun mezarının yanına gömen Geppetto'nun kendisi de; oğlunun mezarının başından hiç ayrılmamıştır...

Geppetto, hem işinden kısmış hem de yediği üç beş lokmadan...

Oğlunun hayatını kaybettiği kilisedeki haçı yapma işi de yarım kalmış...

Ama Geppetto yerinde saymıştır...

"Sardinyalı bir avukatın sobasında yaşayıp bir balıkçı teknesinde Adriyatik'i geçmiş, ünlü bir heykeltıraşın yanında Perugia'da bir kış geçirmiştim..." şeklinde bir giriş de yaptığı 'Gençliğimin Cırıltıları' isimli hikayesini kaleme almaya başlar Cricket...

Ancak elindeki içki şişesiyle ağacın dibine gelerek ağlayan Geppetto'nun kulak tırmalayan yakarışları, Cricket'in işini yarım bırakmasına da neden olmaktadır...

Ki kederli ihtiyarın ağlayışlarını izledikçe kalbi parçalanan Cricket, onu izleyen tek kişi de değildir... Ormanlar da, insanlara görünmeden gezen periler de; Geppetto'nun, oğlunun geri dönmesi için dualar ederek ağlayışını izleyenler arasındadır...

Neyse...

Yeniden kovuğuna ve yazmaya başladığı hikayesinin başına dönen Cricket, birden bire duymaya başladığı gürültü ve sonrasında gelen sarsıntının kaynağını öğrenmek için kafasını dışarıya uzattığında; kovuğuna yerleştiği çam ağacının, Geppetto tarafından kesilerek kulübesine doğru sürüklenmekte olduğunu fark eder...

Çünkü Geppetto'nun niyeti, çam ağacını oyarak Carlo'yu yeniden yaratmaktır...

Hızlıca oyma işlemine girişen Geppetto, kısa bir süre içerisinde ciddi anlamda ilerleme kaydederken; sürekli olarak tüketmek de olduğu alkolünde etkisiyle, bir köşeye sızarak uyumaya başlar...

Geppetto'nun kulübesine giren mavimsi bir Orman Perisi (seslendiren Tilda Swinton); "Küçük tahta çocuk... Güneşle beraber doğup dünyaya gel..." biçimindeki bir söylemle Pinokyo adını vereceği çocuğun dünyaya gelmesine vesile olurken, ona göz kulak olup iyi biri olması amacıyla rehberlik etmesi halinde, Pinokyo'nun bedeninin içine yerleşerek yaşayan Cricket'in de bir dileğini gerçekleştirecektir...

Elbette kitabını yayınlatarak, şöhret ve para sahibi olmak isteyen Cricket ile Orman Perisi; her konuda tam bir mutabakata varacaklardır...

Ebeveynlerin çocuklarıyla beraber seyredebilecekleri, destansı bir kurguya da sahip olan filmin geride kalanında siz değerli sinemasever dostlarımızı; del Toro'nun şanına yaraşır, 98 dakikalık bir bölüm daha bekliyor olacak...

We all already know the classic Pinocchio, but in this movie, a very good job was done by appealing to all ages, the stop motion technique was handled very well, I didn't want to watch it at first, thinking it was a children's movie, but after watching it, I said I'm glad I watched it, I liked the movie very much.

First of all, I think the movie is very beautiful and has deep meanings. The movie is set in Italy in the old times and it also deals with World War 1. Beyond a simple animation, it touches on many historical and social issues at that time and for this reason, I think it is not a movie for children. spoiler: At the beginning of the movie, Geppetto loses his beloved son Carlo and he gives himself to alcohol for a long time. Then he decides to make himself a wooden puppet and makes Pinocchio out of a pine tree. Thanks to an angel, Pinocchio turns into a real boy and takes the place of Geppetto's son.
In fact, because he makes him drunk, he makes a scrawny and barely standing Pinocchio at first and I liked this detail very much. This detail also destroys the perception we all have of a "perfect Pinocchio" made of smooth wood. People don't like Pinocchio at all, but Geppetto loves him even if his personality is not like his son. In one scene, Pinocchio looks at the wooden statue of Jesus and says "if they love him, why don't they love me". The message given in this scene impressed me a lot. Apart from all these, I liked the atmosphere, animations, voiceover and musicals of the movie. And as a result of the research I did, I saw that it was made with the "stop motion" method, which is a very difficult method. To sum up I think it is a very beautiful and impressive production from the messages it gives to the visuals. I highly recommend you to watch it.

I really like Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio movie. It’s a cool animation that I think a lot of people will enjoy. The story is about a puppet who comes to life, and it’s told in a really interesting way that keeps you hooked. I especially like how the story is narrated, it’s done really well and makes the whole experience engaging. Even though it’s different from the Pinocchio we’re used to, I think the changes are done really creatively and add something fresh to the story. Overall, I definitely recommend checking out this adaptation. It’s a fun and imaginative movie that promises a great time for everyone.

I liked the film in general. Firstly, Pinocchio is a childhood story we all know and the film deals many topics along with this story. It had great messages and it was emotional for me. There were also some details connecting Pinocchio and Carlo. At the same time although Carlo and Pinocchio had different personalities, they were precious for their father. On the other hand, there were also characters in the film who were annoying and did not care about children and did not hesitate to use others for their purposes. And it also showed a darker side to us. The points I liked most in the film were the cricket using his wish for Pinocchio, Pinocchio's wish to return before time for his father, and the solidarity of the two children and my heart melted. In conclusion, the movie was good and I recommend you to watch the movie.

I really liked every scene of the movie from start to finish. The drawings and animations were amazing on their own. The emotions in both the Turkish and English voiceovers were very clear and understandable. Overall, I enjoyed the movie. The messages conveyed in the details of the film were quite meaningful. Although Pinocchio is usually a film for children, I liked this version separately. There were quite a few differences from the original Pinocchio that we've known since childhood. Although I found some parts meaningless, the good parts were more. At the beginning of the film, during the lives of Geppetto the master and his son Carlo, Geppetto used the phrase, 'Lies, my dear boy, are found out immediately because they are like long noses, visible to all but the teller of the lie,' to his son. This detail pleased me because it made the well-known characteristic of Pinocchio, his nose growing when he lies, meaningful alongside this phrase. From the beginning of the film, we see that Pinocchio has a personality quite different from Carlo's. These differences were not welcomed by Master Geppetto. After the fight between them following Geppetto's insistence on obeying his words, and Pinocchio's decision to start earning money by working at the circus because he no longer wanted to be a burden, we see events unfold where Pinocchio beautifies his surroundings wherever he goes. His friendship with Candlewick at the military camp and their conversation were quite emotional and meaningful. Pinocchio being called immortal for most of the film was nice, but as the minutes passed, we see that this was not true and that eternal life can bring eternal suffering, as the Angel of Death says. Towards the end of the film, when Geppetto is about to die and Pinocchio has long been dead, waiting to come back, it's a very touching scene when Pinocchio makes a great sacrifice for Geppetto, deciding to return to his mortal form instead of being immortal by breaking the hourglass. Afterwards, when Sebastian's wish to bring him back is fulfilled, the words he says, 'I was trying to make you someone you were not. So don't be Carlo or anyone else. Be exactly who you are. I love you...', were among my favorite parts of the film. After everything Pinocchio goes through, one of the parts I liked the most was when he remains strong, knowing that the deaths that occur due to the passage of time are normal and that instead of grieving over them, he knows they are events that must happen. Towards the end of the film, when Pinocchio embarks on his own world journey, the moment when the full pinecone is shown, symbolizing death, and his fall, was again one of my favorite parts. I highly recommend this movie for everyone.
